The IT band is a layer of connective tissue that runs from your hip to just below your knee. Believe or not, tight hips can affect the movement as well as function of your knee. Two muscles attach to the IT band at the top, the gluteus maximus and the tensor fascia latae. Stretching the IT band will also help to stretch these two muscles.
