Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Yes — chiropractic is widely recognized by health authorities as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for treating neck pain, back pain, and headaches. It has an excellent safety record built on decades of clinical research and practice.

The vast majority of patients feel immediate or near-immediate relief after their first adjustment. As with any healthcare treatment, a small number of people may notice some mild, short-term effects — but these are temporary and part of your body's natural healing response.

At Active Chiropractic, your chiropractor will always perform a thorough health history and physical examination before recommending any treatment. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities at every visit.

Our Approach

Three Pillars of Safe Chiropractic Care

Every appointment at Active Chiropractic is guided by these core commitments.

Thorough Assessment First

Before any treatment begins, your chiropractor conducts a complete health history and physical exam to ensure chiropractic is appropriate for your specific condition and goals.

Open, Two-Way Communication

You're encouraged to ask questions at any point. We explain every step of your care in plain language, and we genuinely want to hear how you're feeling throughout your treatment.

Your Consent, Always

No treatment is ever performed without your informed consent. You have the right to ask questions, request alternatives, or decline any recommended treatment — without pressure.

After Your Adjustment

Possible Short-Term Effects

Most patients feel great after treatment. Here's what a small number of people may notice — all of which are temporary and normal.

Temporary Muscle SorenessSimilar to how muscles feel after starting a new exercise routine — mild stiffness that fades within 24–48 hours.

Mild Local SwellingA small amount of temporary swelling around the treated area can occasionally occur as your body responds to treatment.

Temporary DizzinessRarely, some patients experience brief lightheadedness immediately following an adjustment. This passes quickly.

Local Numbness or Radiating SensationIn rare cases, some patients report brief numbness or mild radiating pain. These sensations are short-lived and resolve on their own.

If you experience any discomfort after your visit, please call us at (519) 442-7100 — we're always happy to help.

What It Means For You

Understanding Informed Consent

Before any treatment begins, your chiropractor is required by law to obtain your informed consent. Here's exactly what that process looks like at Active Chiropractic.

1

We Listen to You First

Your first appointment always starts with a thorough health history. We ask about your current symptoms, past injuries, lifestyle, and health goals — so we understand the full picture before recommending anything.

2

We Explain Your Options Clearly

Based on your history and examination, your chiropractor will explain what they found, what they recommend, and why. We walk you through the expected benefits and any potential risks in straightforward language — no jargon.

3

You Ask Questions — We Answer Them

This is your care. Before any treatment begins, we encourage you to ask every question you have. No question is too small. You deserve to feel completely comfortable and confident before we proceed.

4

You Give Your Consent — Or Request Alternatives

Only once you are fully informed and comfortable do we proceed. If you have any reservations about a recommended treatment, simply say so. We will always discuss alternative options with you and respect your decision entirely.

Patient Empowerment

Your Rights as a Patient

As a patient of Active Chiropractic, you are always in the driver's seat when it comes to your own care.

  • The right to receive complete, accurate information about your diagnosis and treatment options.
  • The right to ask questions and receive clear, honest answers before any treatment begins.
  • The right to decline any recommended treatment without losing access to other care options.
  • The right to request alternative treatments that feel more comfortable for you.
  • The right to know the potential risks and expected benefits of your care plan.
  • The right to stop treatment at any time, for any reason, without any pressure.
  • The right to privacy and confidentiality regarding your personal health information.
  • The right to seek a second opinion from another healthcare professional at any time.

Professionally Regulated for Your Protection

Chiropractic in Ontario is governed by provincial statute and regulated by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO). The CCO is established by legislation in the same manner as the regulatory bodies for all other Ontario health professions.

The regulatory college is responsible for protecting the public interest, setting standards of practice, ensuring quality of care, evaluating and promoting professional competency, and handling any disciplinary matters. This means you can have full confidence that your chiropractor at Active Chiropractic meets rigorous professional standards.

Common Questions

Safety & Consent: FAQs

Still have questions? Here are the ones we hear most often.

Possibly yes — but it depends on the type of surgery, how long ago it was, and the area involved. Your chiropractor will review your complete surgical history during your intake exam and will only recommend treatment that is safe for your specific situation. In some post-surgical cases, gentler techniques or alternative therapies may be more appropriate.
The sound is called cavitation — it's the release of gas (primarily carbon dioxide) from the fluid inside your joint as pressure changes during the adjustment. It's completely harmless and not actually "bone cracking." Many patients also receive effective chiropractic care with little to no noise involved, particularly with techniques like the Activator Method used at Active Chiropractic.
Absolutely. You have the right to decline any recommended treatment at any time. Your chiropractor will discuss alternative approaches with you so that you still receive effective care in a way that feels right for you. No treatment will ever be performed without your full understanding and agreement.
The more you share, the better. Let your chiropractor know about any current medications, previous injuries or surgeries, existing health conditions (such as osteoporosis, arthritis, or cardiovascular issues), and any areas of your body that feel especially tender or sensitive. This helps ensure your treatment plan is tailored safely to your individual needs.
Yes, mild post-treatment soreness — similar to how you might feel after your first workout in a while — is normal and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. If you experience any soreness that feels unusual or doesn't improve, please contact us right away at (519) 442-7100. We want to make sure every visit is a positive experience.
Ontario chiropractors are regulated and licensed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO). The CCO sets professional standards, ensures ongoing competency, and handles public complaints and disciplinary matters — the same way all regulated health professions in Ontario are governed.
